After a few minutes Alejandro notices they aren’t heading to the house. “Poppi where are we going?” “Joey needs new glasses so I figure we should do that first. Plus he is going to need some clothes so we need to do that as well.” “Oh OK.” “Um Mr. Eric sir I cant pay for any of that.” Joey says worried. “I will take care of it. Don’t worry about it. If I wanted to deal with all the paperwork I could probably get it back from the state. But, I wont even worry about it. You need those things and I said I would look after you and its my responsibility so don’t worry a second about it OK.” “I will pay you back I promise.” “There is no need for that either. I do things because I want to. Alejandro how much stuff did I get for Julius when it got cold?” “Gosh Poppi it was a lot. You got me a tone of stuff too. I haven’t even worn all the sweaters yet.” “Alejandro do we need to worry about spending a little money?” “No Poppi we sure don’t. But, as you say we don’t waste it either. We have to respect our money and do the right thing with it.” “Exactly right. Joey just like Alejandro you will get an allowance of $40 a week. I expect you to save at least $10 of it and the rest you can buy whatever you want.” “What do I have to do for it?” Joey asks suspiciously. “I have to keep my room clean and take my laundry down to the basement for Miss Julia to wash. I also have to take out all the trash in the WHOLE house.” “That’s all?” “You haven’t seen the house yet.” “Oh.” “Yes that is part of it. I don’t want you thinking when you get out in the real world that money is just handed to you. You will learn that you work for money.” As Eric says this they pull into the vision center and all get out and go in. “Hi Mr Eric what can we do for you?” The receptionist asks him. “Well, Tasha how are you doing I haven’t seen you in ages.” “OH As always I am great.” She replies. “I figured. How is your mother doing?” “As you know she is in remission. We got scared last year though they saw something on her lung turned out to be nothing.” “I am so glad to hear it. Tell her I said hello.” “I sure will. My brother just started working for you at the McDonald’s by the grocery store.” “Oh my goodness I had no idea he was old enough yet.” “Yep he sure is just turned 16 and he wanted to work for you like I did. But, Chris said you retired. I said that cant be right hes only in his 40s.” “The doctors made me. Now I’m a full time dad. This is my son Alejandro and my new son Joey. As a matter of fact Joey as you can see needs some new glasses so we came here to take care of that today.” Alejandro smiled when Eric introduced him and Joey wasn’t exactly sure what to do so he hid behind Eric. Eric put his arm around him and pulled him over to his side. “Well, I am sure happy to meet you both. You got a great dad for sure.” “You bet we do.” Alejandro replies with a smile, and putting his arm over Joeys shoulder. “OK then I will have you go back into exam room 1 and the doctor will be in shortly. Gosh I am so glad to see you.” “As am I.” They walk back and go into the exam room and Eric has Joey sit in the exam chair. Less then two minutes later the doctor walks in. “Hi Eric Tasha said you were in here with your sons. I didn’t know you had any.” “Well, Gregg its kind of new to me too. As you can see because they are so handsome they aren’t my biological sons. But, I couldn’t love them anymore if they were.” They both just blushed. “OK Lets check out lets see here. Whats your name young man?” “Joey sir.” “Hes got manners. You are doing something right.” Eric just smiles as does Joey. The doctor goes through the exam and points out Joey needs a new prescription. They are ushered out to pick out new frames for Joey. He looks a few minutes and Eric notices he picks up a pair looks at the price and puts them back. He finally chose a pair that are obviously the cheapest he can find, and says he likes those. Eric looks a them and they are just horrible looking. “You like these?” “They are fine sir.” “That’s not what I asked. I think these look a lot better myself.” Eric says grabbing one of the frames he saw Joey get first. Then he had Joey put them on. “Oh yes those look way better. Don’t you think Alejandro?” “Yeah way better. What about these here?” Alejandro says grabbing another pair he had seen Joey smile at when he picked them up. “Oh those are a nice choice Alejandro. Here try these on too.” “Oh yeah I like those too.” Alejandro says. Before they were done Eric had him trying on every pair he had picked up. “So Joey of these pairs which ones do you like the best?” Joey pointed to the first pair Alejandro had got for him. “OK whats your second choice?” Joey pointed to the pair Eric got first. “OK are you sure?” “Yes sir.” AS he says this Tasha walks up. “Have you decided on which frames?” “Yes ma’am we have. He will have these two here. Also I want the thin light weight lenses also the transitions. I believe they are called where they turn into sun glasses in the sun.” “That’s indeed what they are called. OK we will get them done for you pretty quick. The lens maker isn’t busy. Say half an hour or so?” “Alrighty then we will be right back. We have some shopping to do. WE will be back after that.” “Cool. What are you gonna get me?” She says giggling. “You never know.” Eric says grinning back at her. “Mr Eric I don’t need two pairs of glasses.” “Nonsense what if a pair breaks you will have a backup. Besides maybe one day you want to look different or something.” Alejandro whispers in his ear.. “Just say thank you.” “Thank you sir.” “You are very welcome.” So they leave and head over to the mall. Eric walks into Macy’s to get Joey some clothes. Eric looks at him and figures his sizes. He grabs some pants and shows Joey to the dressing room to try them on. Sure enough the boy-lover knows boy sizes. Go figure. He then starts grabbing shirts and sweaters pants, finds a couple nice winter coats. Underwear that Joey said he likes. Boxer briefs. All said and done they were all three loaded down with stuff. “I don’t need all this stuff.” Joey says. “Pshaw.” Eric says. “”Trust me he isn’t done yet. Poppi buys lots of clothes.” “Now we need shoes as well. Eric finds a clerk to size Joey and he finds a nice pair of basketball shoes, a pair of dress shoes. Running shoes a pair of winter boots a pair of cowboy boots. Because everyone needs cowboy boots right? Eric then walks over to pay and sees two of the cutest women’s t shirts one says Adult-ish the other says Be Kind with a heart on it. He gets two of each in different sizes. He thought Joy will love them for Christmas and of course just to mess with Tasha he got the others for her. As the clerk rings up everything the total is well over $1500. Joey starts to say something about its being to much. “Shh Poppi likes to get people things. If you say anything it will make him sad. You don’t want to do that do you?” Alejandro says in a whisper. “No but its way too much stuff and way to expensive. We should have went to goodwill.” Joey says back in a whisper. “No just make sure to thank him for it is all. He loves to help people and besides your his son now.” “But, I’m not really.” “Trust me you are to him.” “OK I will make sure to thank him.” “You will I know it.” Alejandro says smiling. They head back to the car loaded down like pack mules with all the bags. They put everything in the trunk except the bag with t shirts for Tasha and head back to the vision center to pick up Joeys new glasses. As they stroll in he hands Tasha the bag. “Mr Eric I was just kidding.” “I know but I saw these and thought they were perfect for you.” She pulls them out and just laughs hard at the first one then smiles at the second. “You are just too much Mr Eric.” She says as she hugs him. “Thank you so much. “What would you expect for my best employee over?” “You tell that to everyone.” “I always mean it when I say it too.” So Tasha takes Joey over and adjusts the frames to fit his head properly which takes a few minutes per pair. After she is done Joey looks a bit confused the smiles and picks up the pair he likes best and puts them on. The other pair goes into a case. Eric pays with his card and Joey sees its another $700 He thinks I am really going to have to thank him good. “Thank you again sir.” “You are very welcomed Joey.” Eric says as he runs his head. “Come on boys we are all in need of a hair cut.” So they head over to the barber shop and Joey has never had his hair cut by a professional and isn’t exactly sure what to do or what he wants. “Mr Eric I don’t know what to get for a haircut.” “Do you like Alejandro’s haircut?” Alejandro’s is cut super short on the sides and back with kind of long hair on top. “Yeah.” “Do you want it like his or a different way?” “No I like it like his.” “OK That’s easy enough.” The beautician takes him back and washes his hair then brings him back up and cuts his hair to his liking. Afterwards she shaves his neck and edges him out with a straight razor. Alejandro is already done. Eric is just now getting his hair trimmed. He prefers it to be washed after to prevent all the hairs down his shirt. Once they are done Eric pays and they head back to the house, Eric pulls to the front of the house instead of into eh garage because it will be easier to get things upstairs this way with the double staircase versus the more narrow staircase that turns. Joey loo at the house as he gets out. “How many people live here?” He asks. “Poppi. Me and Rich. Miss Julia and Julius live over in the little house there.” Alejandro says pointing. “Its huge.” “I know I thought that too when we first moved here. Poppi always dreamed of owning this house and one day it was for sale. Before we lived in a pretty big house but yeah this one is huge.” Eric is getting bags out of the trunk. “Come on boys I’m not hauling all of these to Joeys room. Which room I don’t know yet. I guess we will haul them upstairs then let him choose his room.” “Sure Poppi.” Alejandro says and grabs some bags. Joey follows suit and grabs a bunch as well. As they reach the door is opens and Miss Julia is standing there, arms crossed. “Thanks for yer callin to let me know about yer new son.” Eric realized he had completely spaced off calling her and letting her know anything. “If it wernt fer Miss Joy I wouldn’t be knowin nuthin about it.” “Oh I am sorry Julia I wasn’t thinking. I just knew we had a bunch of stuff to do before we got home. I do apologize.” He says sincerely. She breaks out into a huge laugh. “I know Mr Eric you wuz jus thinkin about the boy and what he be needin. Its your way and I love you for it. Now here gimmie sum a dem bags. That way he feels more comfortable.” “That be a good idea.” They all carry the bags up to the landing at the top of the stairs and set them all down on the couch that’s there. Joey looks over the side of the landing down at the grand piano below. “I can play the piano. My Grams taught me before she died.” “That’s great Buddy. You can play it anytime you want. Lets start at the far end of the hall this way and he turns to the right. “OK these two here are over the garage and share a bathroom as you can see he says walking through them. Then a cross the hall it has a nice view of the woods both have there own bathrooms. Now the next two are a bot larger but not as big as Alejandro’s room. They also have there own bathrooms. He walks in and sure enough they are both about twice as large as the other bedrooms. Joey just looks at the rooms without a word. “I suppose if you want we can tear down a wall here and make your room as big as Alejandro’s. Or if you want one of the others we can do that as well. I just want you to be comfortable. Now this is Alejandro’s room. We always knock and wait to be invited into someones room here. We don’t just barge in. We also don’t go in someones room if they aren’t in their room.” “Except for Miss Julia.”Alejandro popes in. “Yes well she does go in to clean them and put things away. But she still knocks.” “Yeah she still knocks.” “Now this is Alejandro’s room which he cleans. Not Miss Julia as you will be expected to do as well.” Joeys mouth drops open as he sees how big it is. He sees it is in three sections. One is a sitting area with a couch love seat and a chair around a 60 inch flat screen that has the two newest games systems hooked up to it. In the center is a play area with toys on shelves and a table with a puzzle on it. Then to the left is a massive bed with a couple dressers and some cool nick knacks on top of them. “OK then this is my room here.” Eric says opening the double doors that enter into his room. All three walls are just windows covered by sheer white curtains. It has a light blue carpet and it has a sitting area as well but it is around a massive fire place. That is next to the wall with the doors. Then it has another sitting area off to the right with yet another massive TV. Then directly ahead is a massive bed surrounded by a few dressers and bed tables on each side. “So which bedroom do you want?” “Gosh I don’t know I never had a bedroom before I just always slept on the couch.” “Which one do you like the best.” “I like the yellow one best. Yellow is my favorite color.” “Alright then the one next to mine and a crossed from Alejandro it is. It will now and forever more be Joeys room. Unless he wants to move later.” “Yeah after he hears you snoring.” Alejandro laughs. “I don’t snore. I stayed awake all night to see and I never did once.” This made both boys laugh. “Nah I’m kidding Poppi doesn’t snore.” So they went and got Joeys things together and helped him put it all away in tee closet and dressers. He started to hang up a sweater and Eric stopped him. “You don’t want to hang sweaters buddy. It will stretch them. You want to fold them and pt them in a drawer or you can put them on a shelf in the closet.” “Oh I never really had any sweaters.” “That’s OK you know now.” Eric says rubbing his head. “Don’t worry Joey I didn’t know that either. Poppi is always teaching us something. Its fun usually. But, not when hes teaching me bowling. He always creams me at that.” “I never been bowling. Is it fun?” “Yeah it is want to go now.?” “Alejandro wait until after dinner.” Eric says. “OK sure. Then we can get Julius to bowl too.” “I will let you boys bowl by yourselves. I got a lot of paperwork to get caught up and check my millions if emails it seems.” :OK Poppi.” Alejandro says a bit let down. “Alejandro why don’t you go play some games with Joey until supper time.” “Sure. Come on Joey lets go to my room.” Eric stands there and looks t the wall. Yeah needs to come down. Cant have Joey feeling like Alejandro is better then him. Guess we will take out the other bathroom and make it a closet maybe. Eric walks to the next room and is looking. No I think we can open it up to the hallway maybe. No would look tacky. Leave this one since its on the edge of the room and take out the other. That’s what he decides. He will call a guy tomorrow and see how quickly it can be done. He then goes to his office and starts looking through the emails. After Eric was done he had printed of a few contracts to purchase a few more apartment complexes one in Cheyenne Wyoming. It was by far the best deal. 184 units for only six million. He signed the contracts and faxed them off to the agent that looks for things like this for him. He sent copies to his accountant so he could pay for them. He knows he would get tax credits by financing but doesn’t see a point in trying to do that. He would rather its just paid for. Besides its not like he has filled out his own taxes in years. He wouldn’t even know at this point how many units he owns. Its a lot though he knows that. He looks at the statement his accountant has sent over for the end of the month. Yeah a week after the month has started. He is shocked and sends an email to his accountant to donate twenty million to Saint Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and another ten million to Riley Children’s hospital. He cant even begin to imagine what his tax liability will be this year. Certainly more then he ever thought he would make in his lifetime that’s for sure. He thinks maybe I should get an Escalade. I do like them. Alejandro did make kind of a valid point. Not to mention with Joey joining the family now if friends came over or wanted to go see a movie or something then they wouldn’t have enough room. He could get a mini van he thinks. Nah fuck that. I’m not a soccer mom that’s for sure. With that thought Julia comes in to let him know dinner is almost ready. “OK I will be right there.” He says to her. “I like the new boy. He seems like a keeper.” She says. “Yeah I think so too. I really should have spent some time with him to get him acclimated. But, I think Alejandro will do a good job at it I think I will bowl with them after dinner so he knows I am there for him too.” “Mr. Eric I think you better. He done beat Julius on most of them a few times. You never knows what love can make you do.” “No kidding. Hell I haven’t played then since I was a kid. Maybe I should sneak in some play time when the boys are at school so I can beat them too.” “Youse be a sneaky one. But that’s what I been doing. Jus for now.” She laughs as she walks to get Rich and her son. Eric walks upstairs to get the boys and sees them playing some game he has no clue what it is but they are fighting hard at it. Having a great time. Eric watches in the door way a few moments before he clears his throat. They both jerk their heads his direction. “Julia says dinner is nearly ready.” “Cool what are we having?” Alejandro asks. With Alejandro’s background of not really ever getting enough to eat he is always interested in food. Eric is worried he may get an eating disorder because food is so readily available now. But he sure isn’t going to tell him no he cant eat. He does regulate what kinds of junk food and how much. He can always eat veggies but not candy very often. Its nothing for him to eat a little bag of baby carrots after dinner or a bag of microwave popcorn light salt and butter. He wants him to eat but not kill himself in the process. Alejandro is even learning how to cook. Julia loves to teach him and he loves to learn. Alejandro surprised him one morning with breakfast in bed. He had made home made sticky buns. Eric swears they are way better then anything Cinnabon even thought about. “Joey why didn’t you put some new clothes on?” “I didn’t want to ruin them sir.” “Pshaw. I didn’t buy them to sit in drawers. Why don’t you go put on a pair of new jeans and a t shirt. Alejandro wants to bowl after dinner so that would be good I think.” “Are you sure? Bowling costs a lot.” Eric just smiles. “Just go put on some new clothes buddy. Alejandro go help him pick something out.” “Sure Poppi.” Alejandro jumps up grab Joeys hand and races to his room. “Meet you boys downstairs.” Eric shouts after them. “Yepper Poppi.” Eric noticed Alejandro has started saying Yepper now. He thinks it cute that his boy is saying things he says. Its endearing to him. Eric goes down tot eh kitchen and takes his seat. “So I hear you got a new son.” Rich says smiling. Eric smiles back. “Yes and he is very polite. I think he will fit in very well. He is just like Alejandro used to be though worried about money. Which I admit is a good thing to do. But, he will soon learn he wont have to worry about it for the rest of his life. I like that I know that I have been fortunate enough to supply a living to my boys and to their kids and their kids kids and possibly more. Its a feeling of satisfaction for sure.” “I am sure it is. But, I want to.” Eric smiles at him. “OK buddy.” Julius was busy getting the table set as it was his turn. He walks over and gives Eric a hug. “Hi Mr Eric I heard you had a pretty exciting day.” “You could say that yes.” Julia starts sitting the food on the table and Eric and Rich waited on the others like hogs. Meaning there plates were full by the time the boys got down. Once they got down Eric saw Joey being pulled behind Alejandro. He was looking rather spiffy in a new pair of Levis and a nice long sleeve Nike t shirt. “Well, now don’t you look handsome now.” Eric says smiling. Joey looks at the floor blushing. Julius got up from his spot next to Rich and stuck out his hand. “Hi Joey I am Julius I am pleased to meet you. I think you are going to love living here and I know you will love Mr Eric.” “Thank you.” Joey says shaking Julius hand. “Here Joey you sit in my spot. So you can sit next to Poppi. We will trade every day so we can each sit next to Poppi.” Eric is shocked by this because he even told Cindy that she couldn’t sit there. Rich just looks at him his mouth open. Julia just looks up and says. “That do sound fair then.” “I would like to pray before we eat tonight.” Eric says. Rich looks at Eric funny knowing hes atheist but they all just roll with it. “Dear creator of the heavens and earth. We want to thank you for all you have given us and we definitely want to thank you for bringing my new son into our lives Joey. I pray that he will always feel the love and warmth that we all have to share with him. I ask that you help that love to grow and be strong as well. I wan to thank you for all the things we have and are more then willing to share with Joey. I ask that you help our love for him to blossom into something beautiful as it has with myself and Alejandro and all the others at this table. Eric just smiles back and shoves a piece of potato in is mouth. Joey takes a bite and smiles then shovels it in just as quickly as everyone else. Miss Julia did you make desert tonight?” “Lordy aint you had enough?” Alejandro giggles. “Not for now for later.” “Yes I made Jello surprise.” The surprise was she mixes in whipped cream and fruit. “Yummy.” Alejandro says rubbing his bulging tummy. “Poppi can we go bowl now?” “If you wait a bit I will join you. Rich you want to play a game?” Rich has been trying to bowl and he can usually get one game in but sometimes his hip starts hurting and he cant finish. But, no one hassles him about it. Hes actually pretty good at it too. “Yeah I think I will bowl one with you guys. Show you how to do it.” Rich says laughing. “Whatever old man I will take you to the cleaners.” Eric says. “Good maybe they can get dem wrinkles out a him.” Julia says. This makes them all laugh. Joey isn’t sure how to react. He hasn’t really ever had any fun family banter before. “Oh I can whip you lady.”Rich says with confidence. “You be dreamin now dontcha.” “Okay lets bet on it.” Rich says. “What you wanna bet wit me?” “I bet you if you win I make you breakfast in bed for a week.” “Its a bet den.” “What are you going to bet?” Rich asks. “I don need to bet I gone win.” She says with a big smile. “But if I don’t be winning I will make you dem sticky buns you always be wantin. I ame dem three Sundays in a row for ya.” Rich’s mouth is salivating at the thought of them. “Lets go watch a bit of TV first and let our food settle first.” Eric suggests. “Sure Poppi. Can we watch TWK?” “Sure buddy I like watching travel with Kids. Its a fun show.” They all get up and clean their place and Joey watches and follows their example they all rinse their plate, cutlery and glass and put them in the dishwasher. They follow Eric to the living room and Joey looks at the TV. “I aint never seen a TV that big before.” “Yeah its 110 inches. Poppi likes to watch movies on it. Its so cool its like you are in the theater.” “Never been to the theater before.” “I never had been either until I met Poppi. We go all the time now. Its fun. We will go soon I bet.” Eric turns on the massive TV and finds travel with kids. Its a good one he finds they go to Italy. They all sit and watch it and enjoy the program. Joey is in awe at the show and the TV. Its like the sound is coming from everywhere. When the show is over Alejandro hops up. “Poppi you ready to bowl now?” “Yeah lets get your butt shipping over with.” “I’m going to beat you this time.” “Maybe so you have been getting better.” “One day im going to really beat you and not double my score to do it.” “Of that I have no doubt.” They all get up and start walking to the front of the house. Joey starts up the stairs. “Where you going Joey?” Alejandro asks. “To get my coat its cold outside.” “You don’t need your coat its in the basement.” Alejandro says like everyone has bowling lanes in the basement. “Its in the basement. Like a bowling game?” “You will see come on. We got to get the right size shoes for you.” Alejandro grabs his hand and pulls him along. Once Alejandro has him in the basement he flips the light switch and the lights illuminate the two lanes. “Wow.” Joey gasps. “Yeah that’s what I thought too. Come on lets get you some shoes.” Alejandro guides him over to counter with shoes in nearly every size and multiples in the kids sizes. “I think the shoe guy said you wear a 4 here try these on.” They fit him perfectly. The rest of the group got their size and put them on. “Lets let the old people go first.” Julius says joking. “Sure Poppi that means you go first.” Alejandro says giggling. Eric just smiles and shakes his head. He puts all the names in the computer one luxury Eric got. He didn’t mind keeping score but, its just easier and more fun this way. That and he thinks the graphics are fun. He put all the names in and made sure to put Joey first of the boys. They all bowl and have a great time. It was a heated competition between Rich and Julia.
